Nothing is more important to us than your financial well-being. We go to great lengths to ensure your financial information is safe and secure. But there are also other things you can do to prevent identity theft or foil a phishing attempt. Identity theft is a crime that impacts all aspects of your life: your money, your credit and even your mental and emotional health. The video above outlines ways to prevent identity theft from happening to you, so be sure to watch it and put those ideas into action every day.

Actions to Take if You Think Your Identity has Been Stolen

  1. Get in touch with the fraud departments of the three major credit reporting bureaus and request a fraud alert be placed on your file. This notifies creditors to contact you before opening any other accounts in your name.
    1. Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
    2. Experian: 1-888-397-3742
    3. TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
  2. File a report with your local police. This will help during the credit cleanup process later on.
  3. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can call their toll-free hotline at 1-877-IDTHEFT, or file a complaint online.
  4. Complete an identity theft affidavit. This will help you to report any false accounts that were opened in your name to the companies the new accounts are with.

Don’t Fall Victim to Phishing

Phishing attempts occur when a criminal uses a fake email to get you to click through to a falsified website in order to steal confidential, personal or account information. Most often, phishing emails include a phrase such as “You need to login now to update your information or you’ll lose account access.”

Here are a few warning signs that the email is a phishing attempt:
  • It requests you to enter personal information or submit information some other way
  • The email threatens account suspension or lockout if you don’t comply
  • Asks you to enter your User ID, password or account numbers into an e-mail or a non-secure webpage
  • Asks you to confirm, verify, or refresh your account, credit card, or billing information
  • The “from” email address contains typos designed to mislead you, such as “bill@mricrosoft-suppport”
  • Hovering over a link shows a web address you do not recognize

The golden rule: if you didn’t request the email or do not know the person who sent it, do not click any links within and delete it right away.
